scorpius is setting head first into the west ([info]pinot_scorpius) wrote,

It seems I have forgotten the merits of the quill.

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

I give up. What rough beast, its hour come round at last, does slouch toward Bethlehem to be born?

The beast of a lion's body and man's head born out of the Spiritus Mundi.

I should have guessed! So, now the question is, is it the sphinx or another beast of the same general appearance trying to fool us all?

The Sphinx? Wherever did you find that idea? Have you not heard of the great man-beast harbinger of the apocalypse?

Lovely use of language there. Who is the author?

I quite like the line 'A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun'. It gives me a shiver.

Yeats, I believe.

As it should, the end of the world is no laughing matter.

Why can't the centre hold? I think it can, if you're not being depressing.

First murder and now the end of the world. You have some pretty morbid fascinations, Scorpius.

I am aware. It helps to cope with the morbid fantasies of my bloodline.

This may seem a bit forward -- as we are not quite friends nor shall I imagine will we ever be -- but I did want to say, I never had a problem with your returning to school.

Oh. Um. Thanks. Good to know, I guess.

Oh, that's an interesting poem, even if it is quite depressing. It reminds me of my father's church, a bit -- not quite fire and brimstone, but certainly full of the reminders of human sin and so forth.

It is a little depressing. Though not everything can be sunshine and daisies. Still it would probably get quite boring if it was always one or the other.

I have been informed through the masses that a dance is occurring this weekend, yet I do not wish to attend. Would I be able to give you your Christmas gift instead?

It seems rather strange to have yet another dance when the last was only a month or so ago.

And yes, that would be fine. Certainly a better alternative to the dance.

Another Yeats, hm? Did you know he wrote this after the Muggle World War I? This was a commentary on the destruction the war had caused on the world - well, Europe, I suppose.
